Watermelon Lime Lemonade

I was minding my own business at Trader Joe’s the other day when I looked up and lemons and lines were only $1.50 per pound.  Those puppies are 79 cents each at the grocery store near my house!  So, needless to say, I impulsively bought them and brought them home.

Then I sat around trying to figure out what to do with them.

Then this drink was born.

Then it was gone.

(It is also good mixed with vodka.  I live with a lush who just needed to try it.  Jake, not Lily.)

In other news, my baby now has enough hair to style into a mohawk.  Which should be good for scaring away the boy at daycare who bit her in the head today.  That’s right.  He BIT her.  And her head has teeth marks on it.  Needless to say, she got extra snuggles tonight.  And it wasn’t even a fair fight because she doesn’t have any teeth yet.  Pick on someone your own size, daycare punk!

Watermelon Lime Lemonade
Printer-friendly version

1 pound lemons
1 pound limes
~8 cups watermelon, cubed
6 Tbsp sugar
2 cups seltzer water

Zest and juice the lemons and limes.  Put the watermelon into a large bowl and add the juice.  Dice the zest as small as you can and add 1 tablespoon of each type into the bowl.  Add in the sugar and mix.  Either use an immersion blender right in the bowl or use a blender to liquefy the mixture. I like for it to have a little bit of texture, but if you are looking for straight liquid, you should put it through a cheesecloth or strainer now.

Transfer to a large pitcher.  You can store it like this in the fridge, and then add the seltzer right before serving.  Serve cold with ice.  And with vodka if you would like.

  1. The photos are much improved since you bought that expensive, fancy pants camera. Send me a pic of the day care bully and I will quickly solve Lily’s problem.

  2. Looks super tasty! Too bad it’s cold and wet outside, otherwise I’d run out and get some watermelons to make this. Love the lead-in photo, too! The ring pattern from the defractions in the glass pitcher is pretty cool.

  3. This looks great. You didn’t do anything for that in the daycare? I would’ve brought the roof down. Poor baby. I remember one kid hitting my girl when she was not even 2. I was so furious.

  4. This looks so refreshing and perfect summer! I will definitely try this out during one of the warm summer days :)

  5. i bet i can drink a gallon of this in one sitting!

a long sitting, that is. (:

  6. My brother bit me in the eye when I was 2… kids just can’t seem to keep those fangs to themselves! This looks so refreshing… and I would have to second the idea of adding some vodka.
